Peacock-palette wedding

Kat got in touch with me just a few weeks before her wedding, looking for a number of dried flower pieces for her civil ceremony and wedding. Kat was looking for a ‘peacock’ or ‘oil slick’ palette of colours to complement the teal dip-dye of her wedding dress and the electric blue highlights in her dark hair. Too exciting not to accept the challenge!

Strong blues, purples, a few hot pinks and teal shades made up the colour palette. Teal is the one colour I find quite quite tricky with dried flowers. There is nothing quite this colour without resorting to dyed materials which is just not my thing. Eucalyptus provided this slighlty blue-green tone, and there are no end of options for dried flowers to provide the other colours.

I shared a few flat-lays of materials to check with Kat before starting to create her pieces; confirming the colours were a good match to her vision, and establishing which flowers to make a feature of. Delphiniums in vibrant shades of blue, grown by Lynn South Farms in Shropshire, and statice in popping purples formed the backbone of the arrangements, along with various eucalyptus varieties from local sources. My own dried dahlias in deep burgundies and purples, lilac hydrangea, fuschia strawflowers and gomphrena formed colourful points of focus. Texture and detail come from nigella seed pods, echinops and eryngium ‘thistles’, grasses, marjoram and xerochrysum flowers.

Hand-made silk ribbons from SilkandPurl, were selected to add further colour and luxurious texture and movement to the bouquets. After playing with a teal option, navy and purple were chosen for the ribbons as a more harmonious complement to the flowers.

Kat had collected gin bottles and miniatures for her table flowers. A lovely personal touch as well as being a very economical and environmentally sound choice.

Hair pieces for Kat and her bridesmaids, a wrist corsage for a flower-girl, buttonholes for the Groom and Groomsmen followed the same palette, and a really thoughtful touch for her grandparents who were unable to make the day - a mini wreath to match the wedding flowers.
